Papers, 1889-1939.

The Hering Collection cointains bound volumes of clippings and reprints of his articles, typewritten annals of NYU's College of Engineering, and biographical essays on some of the University's professors. The collection also includes mimeographed brochures on the James Arthur Collection, travel books, and a typescript memoir illustrated with original photographs. The memoir contains images which document Hering's work in Roentgenology, University buildings, laboratories and personnel, the Hering family, and the James Arthur Clock Collection.

Daniel Webster Hering was born near Smithburg, Maryland in 1850. Precocious in mathematics, he obtained a Maryland teaching certificate at the age of eleven. He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering from Yale University. Following a period of employment as a railroad civil engineer, Hering turned to teaching.
